13.1 miles (21.08 kilometers) is a common foot racing distance also known as a half-marathon. The full marathon distance of 25 miles was extended to 26.2 miles as a result of the 1908 Summer Olympic games.
How long will it take me to run?
The naturally gifted, fast people speed across the finish line at 1 hour 30 minutes where as the slower, more determined folks jaunt in at 2 hours 30 minutes. My times range around 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes.
Walking a half-marathon distance will take approximately 3 hours 30 minutes. Using myself as a guinea pig, walking 15.09 miles of the hot and humid 2007 Walt Disney Disney marathon took me 4 hours 11 minutes at a 16:39 min/mile pace. Pro rating this pace at 13.1 miles is approximately 3 hours 38 minutes.
How do I prepare for it?
There’s a variety of half marathon training programs available, as attempting to run one without the proper preparation is unwise. If the concept of running is new to you, I suggest aiming for a slightly less ambitious goal (i.e. a 5K), gradually climbing your way up to longer distances. For conquering this distance on foot refer to training programs such as:
- Hal Higdon
- Cool Running
- Jeff Galloway (run/walking)
